Sunday, February 5, at 1pm is the date and time for one of Delaware’s largest fundraising events – the Special Olympics Delaware Lewes Polar Bear Plunge. The Plunge, celebrating its 26th year, began in 1992 when 78 plungers raised $7,000. Last year, 3,501 Bears raised more than $820,000. Since its inception, the plunge has raised more than $9.1 million.
“Our polar bears continue to support this fabulous event year after year,” said Ann Grunert, Executive Director of Special Olympics Delaware. “And they also continue to recruit their friends to join them. This event truly is
family-friendly, and the perfect way to give back to the community and support such a worthy cause.”
At the Plunge on Sunday, thousands of Bears will take the chilly dip into the Atlantic Ocean, raising money for Special Olympics Delaware’s year-round program of sports training, athletic competition and related programs for over
4,000 children and adults with intellectual disabilities.
Delmarva Broadcasting Company has several radio stations competing to raise awareness and money for Special Olympics Delaware. Petch and Amy on Eagle 97.7 are excited to return to the event this year and are encouraging listeners to join their team, the Snowlympians. “While the lead up and day of is a total blast and a great way to connect with our local community, we’re truly inspired by the Special Olympic athletes,” said Amy. “The water is freezing, but between the hot chocolate and thousands of people on beach, you won’t even notice the chilly temperatures.”
Saturday activities include a Sand sculpting demonstration, 11 am to 3 pm on beach south of Rehoboth Ave; a Fire & Ice event featuring ice cream and wing samples at the Rehoboth Beach Fire Department, 12 to 3 pm ; a 5k Run to the Plunge, starting at 1 pm; and a Restaurant Chili Tasting contest, 2:30 to 5 pm.
