State Duals Set For Tuesday

By Kevin Eickman

After a difficult regular season, wrestling now heads into the most exciting time of the year. This Tuesday the DIAA State Dual Meet Wrestling Championships will take place in Smyrna. As they have the previous three years, Milford has garnered the top seed in Division II. Unlike previous years however, Milford will not be hitting the mat as the prohibitive favorite.

The number two seed in the tournament will be Indian River, who almost beat Milford earlier in the season. The match down at IR was a thriller, coming down to the final match of the evening. With the Buccaneers gaining the victory, courtesy of a pin by senior Bryan Wynes.

Also casting a large shadow will be the number three seed, St. George’s, who hung tough with Milford earlier in the season as well. Rounding out the field in D II will be Sanford, Laurel and Caravel. The top two seeds get a bye and the semi-final matches are set to begin at 5:30, with the Championship round at 7:30pm.

The Division I tournament is stacked with Henlopen North teams, with five of the six seeds coming from the conference. Defending champs Smyrna are rolling and look to be an unstoppable force as the number one seed, with Cape Henlopen earning the second seed. The other Henlopen North teams are Sussex Central (3), Caesar Rodney (4) and Dover as the 5th seed.
