The Music School of Delaware has just completed a month-long campaign to celebrate music and raise much-needed funds for financial aid and student scholarships. “I Love Music Month” is an annual drive for students, families, faculty and staff to recognize what they love most about music – teachers, a favorite composer, or fellow student – by giving a gift in support of financial aid and student scholarships.
This year, the Music School’s focus was to engage its student population in statewide fundraising efforts. The Milford Branch itself set a fundraising goal of $2,500. Milford Branch Director Kate Inie-Richards proudly reported that the Branch exceeded its goal, raising $2,785. “February’s ‘I Love Music Month’ was a huge success for the Music School of Delaware, helping us to raise awareness about financial aid and student scholarships,” she notes. “The campaign was an exceptional way to teach children the importance of ‘giving back’ as well as to celebrate the value of music education.” More than 20% of the Music School’s students receive some form of financial aid to help cover the cost of lessons.
Sandhya Viswanathan one student who participated in I Love Music Month at the Milford Branch. Sandhya, a 6-year-old violin student, was thrilled to contribute to the campaign and found it a wonderful opportunity to raise money while practicing.
Her mother, Sowmya Viswanathan, is a board member of the Music School. “As a parent and a board member, I feel initiatives such as this are a vital part of the continued success of the Music School,” she says. “It raises awareness of the school’s invaluable financial aid and student scholarship program and gives students a way to participate in and learn the importance of philanthropy at a young age.” Sandhya is six years old, but she is mature enough to understand that not everyone has easy access to the music lessons that she takes for granted, says Sowmya.
Although I Love Music Month has ended, supporters may still make an impactful gift in support of financial aid and student scholarships by making a secure online donation at musicschoolofdelaware.org/giving or by calling the Milford Branch at 302.422.2043 for more details.
