The CenDel Foundation has announced the opening of a new fund to benefit outstanding high school students from Central Delaware. The Dr. C. Edward Graybeal Scholarship Fund, with an initial donation of $100,000, will fund scholarships to exceptional students at Milford High School. Dr. Graybeal intends to offer additional annual contributions to the fund.
“I grew up on a small dairy farm in Rising Sun, Maryland. We always had plenty to eat, but not much money. With some tuition and scholarship help, and working in the dining room a minimum of 15 hours a week for room and board, I was able to attend the University of Maryland in the pre-med program. In three years I was only two credits short of getting my degree when I was accepted into The School of Medicine at the University of Maryland in Baltimore. There again, I received some scholarship help. I am pleased to be able to help some young students attend college or a trade school,” he said.
Dr. Graybeal was a Board certified surgeon at Milford Memorial Hospital for 35 years, and was Chairman of the Department of Surgery for 23 years before relinquishing the position. He served on the Board of Trustees of several health related organizations, including BlueCross Blue Shield of Delaware, and he served as President of the Medical Society of Delaware in 1976.
All three of his sons were admitted to medical school after graduating from the University of Delaware in just three years. Two are surgeons and the other is an Endocrinologist.
The CenDel Foundation, which works to increase philanthropic giving in Central Delaware, will help manage the fund. According to Tonda Parks, President of the Foundation’s Board of Directors, “We are inspired by Dr. Graybeal’s generosity and his dedication to helping students further their education. As the cost of college continues to rise, his fund will provide many students with the financial assistance they need to follow their dreams. The CenDel Foundation is proud to support Dr. Graybeal in this effort.”
Seniors at Milford High School are encouraged to apply for 2017 scholarships, which will be awarded later this year. Applications are being accepted through March 31st and will be awarded based on academic achievement, community service experience, financial need and recommendations.
