Class of 2017 Celebrates Graduation

On Friday, May 26 the Milford Senior High School class of 2017 proudly stood on the field at Briggs Stadium to celebrate the culmination of their twelve years of hard work and dedication. The stadium was filled with family and friends supporting the accomplishments as the graduates took their first glance at their futures. Some students will choose college, some will join the work force and some will serve in the US Military, but all have moved one step closer to fulfilling their destiny.

Valedictorian Alexis Celine Peterson spoke to the class of 2017, urging her classmates to understand that each one of them has the ability to do something great. “I know that every one of my peers sitting in this graduating class today has the ability to succeed in whatever endeavors we have planned for the future after high school,” said Peterson. “So no matter whether we leave here and go straight into the workforce, the military, or into college, we all can be successful as each new challenge we take will help build our strength and character and although we may make mistakes, those mistakes will teach us valuable lessons. And there will be times when we may feel tired and ready to give up, but don’t give up because in those tiring and weary times that is when you learn that you must keep fighting and rise above it all.”

Peterson earned a 4.8 GPA during her career at Milford High School, scored the highest level on all seven of her Advanced Placement courses and received an award from the Future Academy of Physicians for outstanding academic performance through Secience, Technology, Engineering and Math. She will attend Hampton University to study Human Services in the fall.

Salutatorian Daniel Zang spoke to his classmates about the memories they have shared and the changes that will soon begin in each of their lives.”Now that we’re graduating I’ve started to realize how much my life will be changing soon. I’ve never had much love for extreme change, and I know it’ll be especially hard to see friends drift away,” said Zang. “It’s a natural part of life, sure and change is necessary to grow as a person. But the people I’ve become friends with have meant so much to me.”

Zang earned a 4.76 GPA during his time at Milford, was part of the All-Academic Challenge program at Delaware Technical and Community College and was Vice President of the Leo Club. He will attend the University of Delaware majoring in Mechanical Engineering with a concentration in Aerospace Engineering.

Class President Kate Melvin spoke to the Class of 2017, encouraging them to be a leader in their future endeavors. “I aspire for all of you to step up in some way shape or form to lead someone or something,” said Melvin. “Ensure change, be a voice and make a difference. It’ll change you too…Leave the world more interesting for your being here.” Melvin was a varsity athlete and completed six Advanced Placement courses. She will attend Long Island University where she will play field hockey and pursue a degree in Nursing.

Thirty-two students were recognized during the graduation ceremony for their achievement of making the Milford Senior High School Superintendent’s Honor Roll. These seniors earned Honor Roll all four quarters of all four years of their high school career. These seniors included Margaret Amory, Summer Arthurs, Genesis Chamberlayne, Valeria Coverdale, Alexander Creasey, Jessica Creigh, Skylar Field, Allison Fitzgerald, Bianca Haro-Purata, Michaela Huey, Ethan Hurd, Rebecca Hutchinson, Claire Landon, Daphne Leighty, Katelyn Melvin, Hailey Morgan, Brad Mundorf, Alexis Peterson, Kieran Pheasant, Brianna Redlich, Michaela Roach, Deja Rodriquez-Santiago, Jennifer Rust, Amanda Sauer, Donald Scott, Hayden Shockley, Megan Stevenson, Alex Toledo, Daniel Voss, Bryce Warren, Megan Wolfe and Daniel Zang.
