On Saturday mornings at the Riverwalk Farmers Market in Downtown Milford, local farmers can be found selling their harvest as they talk with families about their season ahead. Nash’s Veggies, which has been in existence since 2014, has been a hit downtown as the call to buy food from more small, sustainable farms has continued to increase. Located on three acres of land, Nash’s Veggies carries produce grown three miles south of the farmers market site.
A surveyor by trade for the last 10 years, Josh Nash stumbled upon his passion while harvesting his family garden in Milford. At the age of 19, Nash knew that when he moved to his own residence in Harrington he wanted to create an experience where he could grow all the produce he would need on the land he lived. Starting with a 40’ by 40’ plot, he expanded to a 1/3 acre when he moved to Lincoln, DE in 2014.
“When I started looking for houses, the property was the most important because I knew I wanted to do something with it,” said Nash. “I enjoy it so much and I am excited that there is room to grow.”
For Josh education continues to be key as he learns from experience day to day and season to season. He has completed the beginning farmers program at both the University of Delaware and Delaware State and continues to learn from other small and large farmers from lower Delaware.
The business began with a simple need to export surplus produce that Nash could not consume himself at the time of harvest. Originally named Nash’s Veggie Drop, he placed the produce online and delivered it to homes and local offices after his work day ended. As farming began to take up more of his free time, he made the decision to join the farmers markets in Milford and Milton to sell his produce on Friday evenings and Saturdays. He has enjoyed providing a variety within his harvest throughout the summer and fall including radishes, turnips, beets, carrots, potatoes, baby spinach, kale, tomatoes, squash and cucumbers.
“Everything is done by hand and I believe that soil ecology is key to growing great food,” said Nash. “If you buy something from my stand it has been touched by these hands. It is extremely fresh and harvested just forty-eight hours before it is at the market.” He states that he and his helpers use the best all-natural and organic practices when handling produce from seed to harvest.
Nash finds a balance of work and pleasure from farming. Although it can be very labor intensive, he enjoys being outdoors and seeing the garden grow. The fist year he planted 300 blueberry bushes alongside his other produce and only 30 survived the harsh winter. “I have to be honest with you, after the first year I wanted to quit, it was tougher than I ever thought,” he said. “[three years later] I am still exhausted but after a few minutes in the garden I feel rejuvenated.”
On his current property, Nash plans to grow his plots to put one and one half acres into production as well as look for other local land to rent. As the work grows and the number of farmers markets Nash’s Veggies will attend increases, Nash gives much credit to his partner Curtis Hamm who came on board this summer. “I get a lot out of it,” said Hamm. “It’s relaxing and very rewarding every day. There is always something else to do.”
