On Monday, June 26, City Council approved a zoning request from KP Realty Holdings to convert a building that was built for the former Sonic location into a Dunkin’ Donuts. The current building, which is 1,840 square feet would be expanded into a 5,974-square foot building.
“Dunkin’ Donuts would be located in the southernmost commercial suite to allow for a drive-thru,” Rob Pierce, City Planner said. “Two other commercial spaces are proposed for retail locations. Although several of the proposed uses are permitted uses within the C-3 highway commercial zoning designation, Code requires that zoning districts with multiple permitted uses or mixed use of property must be deemed conditional use.”
According to Justin Drake, Senior Manager of Public Relations for the Dunkin’ Brands Group, the company is planning on building a store at the location.
“There are plans for a new Dunkin’ Donuts restaurant to be developed in Milford over the coming years,” Mr. Drake said. “The restaurant will serve Dunkin’ Donuts’ delicious menu of high-quality coffee and espresso beverages, hot and iced teas, frozen beverages, sandwiches and baked goods. While we are unable to share additional details at this time, we look forward to serving our loyal guests at this new location in the future.” Mr. Drake was unsure if the current location housed in Walmart would remain open or what retail stores were being considered for the additional pad sites.
Dunkin’ Donuts began in 1948 in Quincy, Massachusetts, originally known as “Open Kettle.” The company was founded by William Rosenberg who served donuts for a nickel and coffee for ten cents. The name changed after a brainstorming session with executives, becoming Dunkin’ Donuts in 1950. Mr. Rosenberg wanted to serve the freshest, most delicious coffee and donuts in a modern, well-merchandised store with efficient, friendly staff.
The first franchise opened in 1955 and, within a decade, there were more than 100 Dunkin’ Donuts in the country. The company introduced its famous Munchkins in 1972 and has since expanded its menu to include a wide variety of food and beverages. The company has remained in the number one spot in customer loyalty for more than a decade and has become a leader in digital innovation. The Dunkin’ Mobile App lets customers pay for their purchase directly from the app with a virtual Dunkin’ Donuts card. The app also allows customers to review their Dunkin’ Perks account or locate their nearest location.
Today, there are more than 12,000 Dunkin’ Donuts locations throughout the world and the company serves more than 1.9 billion cups of hot and iced coffee each year.
The new location in Milford will undergo significant changes to the building as well as entrances and exits. There is no information on when construction of the new building will begin or when the new location will be open to the public.
