St. John’s to host 27th Annual Oktoberfest

St. Johns Church in Milford will host their annual Oktoberfest on September 22 at 6pm and September 23 at 11:30am. This year, the church will celebrate their 27th Annual event. The festivities will kick off on Friday evening with live music from local favorites The Funsters and continue into Saturday, celebrating European cultures through live entertainment, food and fun.

St. John the Apostle, St. Bernadette is a multi-ethnic Parish that has been providing for the spiritual needs of Catholics since 1910.  Today the Church ministers to over 1,400 families and provides outreach to those in need in the greater Milford and Harrington areas. The Oktoberfest celebrations in Milford began in 1990 by a German man named Karl Thomas and wife Renate as a way to raise money for St. Johns Church. Revenue made from the first year went to put a new roof on the church.

“Its a long running parish and community tradition, it is exciting to see all the different people that come out and enjoy the live entertainment and food,” said Amanda Fulton, Admin Assistant at St Johns Church.

New this year is a 5K Run/Walk. The race begins at 6pm, with a Healthy Kids Run, kids 10 and under, starting at 5:55pm nd day-of registration at 5pm. Both races begin on School Place, in front of the Church. Registration is $20 until September 15 and $25 after and on event day. For adult participants, free beer will be available at the end of the race, donated by Mispillion River Brewing and NKS Distributors. Families can sign up at

The ever-popular Oktoberfest international food court will be serving up their traditional German entrees, along with Italian, Hispanic, Polish, good old hamburgers, hot dogs, French fries, Polish ice and homemade baked desserts.

“The international flavors make this event fun, you can try all different styles in one place.” said Fulton.

On Saturday, the festivities will begin at 11:30am with arts and crafts booths, helicopter rides, a dessert booth with over 100 items and entertainment to carry event goers through the entire day. Children’s games ranging from inflatables such as an obstacle course, bounce castle and Mickey’s Clubhouse, plus a petting zoo and other games will be on site on Saturday. The planning committee also added adult yard games to the entertainment lineup this year including Cornhole, jumbo jenga, ladder ball and bocce ball.

Saturday’s entertainment lineup includes German Enzian Dancers, the McAleer School of Irish Dancing and Die Immergrun Musikanten from 12 to 4pm and the Glass Onion Band from 6 to 10pm. “We hope families leave with a sense of community and understand they are always welcome to the church,” said Fulton. “We are a multi-ethnic church and always open to our community.”

Event organizers ask residents and visitors to mark their calendars now for the 27th Annual Oktoberfest, September 22 through 23 at St. John’s Catholic Church in Milford, DE.
