DE Tech Chocolate 5K, Feb 10

The 6th annual Delaware Tech Terry Campus Chocolate 5K Run/Walk will take place on campus Saturday, February 10, 2018. This family-friendly event offers a 5K run on a single loop USATF-certified course, a 5K walk, a free Kiddie K, and post-race chocolate treats for participants and their guests. The Kiddie K starts at 9:50 a.m., followed by the 5K run and walk at 10.

Jennie Hess, Terry Campus marketing manager and a member of the Chocolate 5K organizing committee, states that the success of the run has come from the unique experience it provides.“It is that it’s a true family-friendly event with an activity for everyone, from the free Kiddie K ‘fun run’ to the full 5K run or walk,” said Hess. “Another aspect is the course design. It challenges the competitive runner, but it is also enjoyable for those who are walking or running at a more relaxed pace. But without a doubt, the most unique and fun aspect of the day is the post-event chocolate party.”

Participants and their supporters warm up with homemade hot chocolate and indulge in an array of home-baked chocolate treats and freshly prepared chocolate ganache, which comes with fresh fruit, homemade marshmallows and other treats great for dipping. Students in the campus’ culinary arts program make all of the desserts, which “truly makes the Chocolate 5K the sweetest 5K in Delaware”

The event was created as a fundraiser to benefit the international education program with a specific focus on study abroad scholarships and the on-campus Global Understanding Series. When the idea of holding a 5K was initially discussed, there was strong sentiment to do something a little different than the traditional 5K event, leading to the decision to hold the event in winter. Early February was eventually selected with a chocolate theme due to the proximity to Valentine’s Day. The International Study Abroad Scholarship Program funds multiple scholarships to help qualified students cover expenses for life-changing experience of studying abroad.

“Study abroad opportunities can be life-changing and highly rewarding experiences that can result in a new perspective, friends, educational and career goals, and a passion for different cultures,” said Hess. “Delaware Tech’s study abroad program offers faculty-led experiences in which students take an on-campus class during the semester and then travel abroad as a group for an 8- to 10-day experience.” All courses are tied to a program of study or general education credits. This year’s study abroad destinations are Vienna and Prague, Italy, Vietnam, Amsterdam and Brussels, and Dominican Republic.

In addition to having a safe and enjoyable experience, the college hopes that participants and their guests learn more about Delaware Tech, including academic and student life offerings, workforce development programs, and continuing education opportunities.

“Delaware Tech, with campus locations in Dover, Georgetown, Stanton and Wilmington, is a statewide community college committed to providing affordable, open admission, post-secondary education that is relevant and responsive to labor market and community needs,” said Hess. “The College offers comprehensive educational opportunities that contribute to the economic vitality of the state, including career, general, developmental, and transfer education; workforce development; and lifelong learning.”

Additional amenities include an event T-shirt, chip timing, and awards to overall male and female champions, overall masters winners, and the top three finishers in 5-year age groups. There will also be an award for the best Valentine-themed costume. On-line registration is open at go.dtcc.edu/Chocolate5K. The entry fee is $25 until February 3 ($30 thereafter). Race-day registration opens at 8:30 a.m. Participation is limited to the first 700 registered runners and walkers.
