The Milford Relay For Life Committee has set the 2018 Relay for Saturday, June 16. The committee has selected “Moonlight Mardi Gras – Help Unmask A Cure” as this year’s theme. A kick-off meeting will be held Tuesday, February 13 beginning at 7pm, Fat Tuesday, at the Milford Parks and Recreation Building at Franklin Street, Milford. The 21st annual community event raises money for the American Cancer Society.
The organization utilizes funds raised for cancer research and transportation for cancer patients. Event Co-Chair Carmen Kemper stated, “Through community participation, Relay For Life celebrates cancer survivors, honors our family members, friends and co-workers that lost their battle against cancer and recognizes care-givers for their commitment.” The relay is comprised of teams representing businesses, organizations, schools, agencies, and families. Leading up to the event, teams ask co-workers, neighbors, family members and friends to help support their efforts with donations.
“Teams hold community fundraisers, yard sales, pancake breakfasts, quarter auctions, car shows, bike runs and more,” said event Co-Chair Charles Gray. “The event is a culmination of each team’s effort along with celebrating and honoring those touched by cancer.”
Relay for Life continues to help individuals by showing them that comfort, healing and support can be found by sharing with others who have experienced cancer in some form in their lives; directly or through loved ones. The Relay for Life event offers opportunities for participants to meet others who are as equally passionate about finding a cure for cancer, thank people who have helped with personal cancer experiences and make new, lasting friendships and memories.
The event will be held at the Milford School District track field located behind the retired middle school on Lakeview Avenue. The track field will host team sites, camp sites and activities. Activities will include food sales, children’s activities, other items for sale, entertainment, opening and closing ceremonies and special laps sponsored by teams and local businesses. Teams will decorate sites based upon the theme and walk the track for the duration of the event. The main event will begin at 5pm with opening ceremony and survivor lap at 6pm. A luminary ceremony will be held at 9:30pm and a closing ceremony at 11:50pm. Additional activities will be announced as the event draws closer.
Sponsorships are available to businesses and organizations. “Businesses can register a team, become a sponsor, or both. A business challenge could include a challenge to employees to raise funds and include a company match,” stated Mr. Gray. “We are thankful to have a great partner as the Milford School District provide our event location and participate. We encourage those interested in the event to visit our website via Relay For Life and our Facebook page for ongoing announcements, sponsor recognitions and to register with a team or to register a new team.”
During the upcoming meeting on February 13, one lucky attendee will win a Mardi Gras King Cake and other attendees could win additional door prizes. Team Captain Packets will be available and a discussion regarding online fundraising will be included. The meeting is scheduled to last an hour and those interested in the event to participate are encouraged to attend. The next meeting will be held Wednesday, March 14, 2018 at the same location.
