“We lost today because I didn’t do a very good job. I just have to do better.”
As a coach, Milford Softball Head Coach Sean Brennan knows what it takes to win a game. It takes every member of the team doing their job, and doing it well. That means that when his team loses a game, it’s not just his players who go under the microscope, but himself as well. Milford played 3 games last week, and went 1-2 on the week. They beat rival Lake Forest by a score of 11-4 to start the week, winning the Battle of the Bat, but then lost two straight games to Concord High School by a score of 6-11 and then to Laurel High School, 10-11.
Against Concord, Milford started off the game by giving up 7 runs in a first inning riddled with errors. From there, the Bucs had to shorten their focus, playing one inning at a time, and managed to claw back from 7-0 to make the game 7-5 going into the 7th inning. Concord managed to score 4 in the top of the 7th, and the game ended in an 11-6 defeat for the Bucs. Still, Milford showed a growth in their mental strength, having let emotions cost them a game a week before against Cape. This time, Milford was able to control their emotions, and almost managed to crawl back into a game that seemed out of reach early.
“When it’s 7-0 that early, you have to change your focus to just winning the next inning. We ignore the 7, and start climbing back into the game one inning at a time. Every inning that we win, the mountain gets a little smaller, and you find yourself back in the game. We got almost to the top of that mountain, and then we started swinging at bad pitches in the 6th when we saw how close we were. We lost to a good Concord team, and from here we just have to get better,” Brennan said.
Against Laurel, Milford gave up another 7 run first inning, and again found themselves climbing out of an early hole. This time Milford was actually able to tie the game up, making it 9-9 in the fourth, but again the Bucs came up just short of pulling off the comeback. Still, Milford can find comfort in the fact that they were two bad innings away from picking up a 3-0 week.
Against Lake, Milford played solid defense and a grand slam from senior pitcher Morgan Abbott put the Bucs out to a 7-0 lead in the third inning. Junior Morgan Petty also had a solo home run.
“We were laser focused for seven innings. Their pitcher is one of the best in the state, and getting out to an early lead was crucial for us. It was nice for us to win the bat, but really it’s just one of 18 games. The bat is nice, and it’s a cool thing to have, but we play every game one inning at a time. It keeps the moment from getting too big, and it keeps us focused on what is right in front of us,” Brennan said.
