Flags Honor Local Heroes

The Milford Rotary Club is once again sponsoring Flags for Heroes, a national program to honor our nation’s heroes and heroes in the local community.  Flags will be on display at Bicentennial Park in downtown Milford from May 24 to June 3.

“The event is special in two ways,” said event organizer Gary Downes. “One it’s an opportunity for the families, friends and the community to recognize and honor the service of our soldiers and first responders and two it’s a fund raiser for the Milford Rotary ‘s scholarship program to help our local young people attend college.”

Last year, Milford Rotary raised over $10,000, as they placed over 150 flags in the downtown park. Anyone may honor a hero by sponsoring a flag for $50. The name of the hero selected by the sponsor, will accompany each flag.

“When the people of this community, especially those that have or had loved ones in service, see this beautiful display of flags they should have a great sense of pride and gratitude for those who commit to serving,” said Downes. “This amazing display of over two hundred flags, many with markers in honor of those who serve, remind me of how important it is for us not to take for granite the commitment and sacrifice each made to keep us all safe.”

Sponsorship forms can be obtained from any Milford Rotarian, on the Milford Rotary website http://milfordrotaryclub.com or by contacting Gary Downes at 302-745-7697. Proceeds from the project will be used by The Milford Rotary Club to support community projects.

In 2016-2017, the Milford Rotary Club sponsored six college scholarships totaling $12,000, as well as contributions to the Mispillion Art League, the Milford Food Pantry, the Milford High School Music Department, and the City of Milford Parks and Recreation. It is the goal of the Milford Rotary Club to continue to make Milford a great place to live.
