St. John’s Holds House Blessing

St. John the Apostle Parish held a House Blessing of the newly constructed rectory on Thursday, May 24 in Milford, DE. Bishop Francis Malooly of the Wilmington Diocese and Father Anthony Giamello of St. John the Apostle/St. Bernadette welcomed members of the church to celebrate a new beginning.

“The blessing by the Bishop is a beautiful way to start a new beginning in this house,” said Father Giamello.

In March 2017, St. John the Apostle broke ground for a new rectory next to the church. The new rectory will house the pastor and associate pastor at the church with a third suite for visiting priests and seminarians. Before building the new rectory, the associate pastor lived in the house that was demolished for the rectory while the pastor lived above the church offices. The church believes the new rectory will make the pastors more comfortable and be a more attractive arrangement for visiting clergy.

“This is an important project that was part of the capital campaign for our parish,” said Father Giamello. “This rectory will allow several priests to live under the same roof as they minister to God’s people.”

The new rectory was built with money raised in a capital campaign started by Bishop Malooly over three years ago throughout the entire diocese. The campaign had a goal of $31 million with every parish asked to raise a targeted amount. In addition to the rectory, the campaign has allowed St. Bernadette’s to install air conditioning in their Parish hall.

With a recently built Parish hall and a growing annual Oktoberfest event, St. John the Apostle and St. Bernadette have worked to welcome the community into their parish, both new members and those that have attended in the past.

“Please come home, Jesus is waiting for you with open arms,” said Father Giamello. “This is a warm, welcoming and hospitable community. Our mission is to heal wounds and warm hearts to Christ.”

Services at St. John the Apostle, 506 Seabury Ave in Milford, DE, are held Saturdays at 5pm; Sundays 8am, 9:30am and 11am and in Spanish at 6pm. Services at St. Bernadette, 109 Dixon St. in Harrington, DE, are held Saturdays at 4pm and Sundays at 10am.
