Second Street Players will present Shrek: The Musical! on July 13, 14, 15, 20, 21 and 22. Curtain is at 7pm for the Friday and Saturday shows and 2pm for the Sunday shows. The story features the lovable but grouchy ogre Shrek and his sarcastic sidekick Donkey who set off on a quest to rescue the beautiful princess Fiona. Along the way, they encounter the comically villainous Lord Farquaad and a ferociously affectionate dragon as well as an assortment of talking animals, witches, fairies, knights and magical creatures.
The Second Street Players and director John Moller recently announced the cast for their upcoming production. Principal players in this production will include Steven Dow as Shrek, Alonzo Dixon as Donkey and Candice Castro as Fiona. Although this will be Castro’s first role at Second Street Players, she is a veteran of live theater for over 25 years.
“This is such a fun show, I love the music and very excited to play opposite Steven Dow,” said Castro. Princess Fiona has been an exciting role for Castro as the character is a “feisty, lively princess, not the typical subdued princess role usually portrayed in fairy tales.”
Castro hopes that audiences identify with Shrek’s statement that fairytales need to be updated. “Life does not always go as you plan but everyone gets a happy ending, even if it not the path we plan,” she said.
Meddling in the affairs of the heroes will be the diminutive Lord Farquaad, who will be played by Jose Bernard. Filling out the ensemble for this production as fairytale characters, loyal Dulocians, knights, dragons, rats and things are 16 talented individuals from all over Kent and Sussex counties. They include Abbi Martinez, Rhys Humphries, Lillian Mandala, Ashlie Workman, Linda Hyler, Julianna Markel, Sydney Gross, Keysha Martinez, Amire Collins Dustin McHale, Jace Thompson, Dylan Philips, Kenny Donnelly, Joshua Dinan, Timothy Free and Colby Crawford.
