You may have already seen the buzz, but with less than a month to go until the Inaugural Milford Ladybug Festival, we’re happy to give you the inside scoop on what’s headed our way on Saturday, September 22.
What is the Ladybug Festival? The Ladybug Festival is a live music block party that celebrates women in music. The event has taken place in Wilmington for seven years and just brought approximately 7,500 people into Downtown Wilmington this past July, despite heavy rain throughout the entire second day of the event.
Where is it happening? The event is taking place in Downtown Milford with live music at 17 locations! The main stage will be located right in the middle of Walnut Street facing toward Park Ave. Other locations for music are: Arena’s Milford, Causey Mansion Bed & Breakfast, Dolce Bakery & Coffee Shop, Elegant Styles, Gallery 37: A Destination for Artful Living, Georgia House Restaurant, Irish Rose, the Library Amphitheater, Lifecycle, Milford Antiques/Red Bandana, Mispillion Art League, My Sister’s Fault (directly outside), Park Place Restaurant & Lounge, Petite Sweets, the Riverfront Theater, and Riverwalk Gifts & Toytopia.
Aren’t some of these businesses a little small to host live music? The smaller venues (Irish Rose, Elegant Styles, Dolce Bakery & Coffee Shop, Milford Antiques/Red Bandana, Petite Sweets, and Riverwalk Gifts & Toytopia) will be hosting singer songwriters doing unplugged “busking” style sets during the event. The idea of the event is to bring new visitors into Milford to eat, drink, and shop, and there’s no better way to get people in the door than by putting live music inside.
What time will this all be happening? The music will kick off at several locations including the main stage at 3:00pm and will wrap up by 9:00pm.
Will there be vendors on the street? Yes, we will have nine food/dessert trucks and fifteen art/craft vendors on the street. It will be quite different from the annual Bug & Bud Festival. We want attendees to know this is a music festival with vendors, not a vendor festival with music.
Speaking of the music, will there be a variety of genres? Yes, we work hard to try to include something for everyone to enjoy and provide a lot of variety. We’ve got Blues, Funk, R&B, Soul, Folk, and more.
Who are the “headliners” of the event? The Festival headliner is Vanessa Collier who is a rising star in the Blues world. She graduated from Berklee School of Music and is considered a master musician of her instrument, the Saxophone. Fans may have seen her at the 2015 Ladybug Festival, or headlining last years’ Smyrna at Night event. We also consider Nalani & Sarina, identical twins from New Jersey, to be headliners for the event. They have performed at every single Ladybug Festival except the first ever in 2012, working their way up from a small restaurant stage to the main stage headliner in Wilmington this year. We know people here in Milford will fall in love with both acts.
Will there be beer available for those who want it? Yes, there will be three outdoor bars located on Park Ave, Walnut St., and in the Farmers Market area that will provide beer, wine and seltzer products. The bars will be provided by Mispillion River Brewing and NKS Distributors.
Where can readers go to find more information before the event? Head over to www.theladybugfestival.com for all the information. We’ve got the full schedule of performances, an event map showing where each venue is as well as available parking, links to each of the artists performing at the event, links to the venues and the vendors, and links to the sponsors who have made this all possible.
Speaking of sponsors, what should residents know about the importance of sponsors for this event? The sponsors for this event, especially the Gold Level sponsors like the City of Milford, Delaware Division of the Arts, Eagle 97.7, Gallery 37, and Milford LIVE are the reason this event is possible and, more importantly, the reason it’s free to attend. We pay every artist who performs and each staff member who works the event.
