The Andrew Geyer Memorial Golf Classic  is planned at the Rookery North in Milford on September 14 with registration beginning at 11:30 and a shotgun start at 1 PM. Proceeds from the tournament go toward the Andrew Joseph Geyer Endowed Scholarship at Wesley College in Dover.

“Andrew loved golf,” Gladys Geyer-Jarrell, Andrew’s mother said. “So, what better way to continue Andrew’s legacy but through a golf tournament to increase the award.”

In 2009, Andrew passed away at the age of 22 when he was struck by a car while visiting friends at West Virginia University. Andrew graduated from Milford High School and was not only a strong academic student, he was a talented golfer as well. In the spring of 2009, he was posthumously selected to the Division III Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar Team as well as his bachelor’s in political science from Wesley. Prior to his passing, Andrew was named to the All-Capital Athletic Conference First Team in 2008 after he finished fifth at the conference championships. He was also instrumental in the seventh place Wolverine finish at the 2008 NCAA Division III Championships.

“The tournament began in 2014,” Mrs. Geyer-Jarrell said. “The endowed scholarship was created after Andrew’s untimely death and, by graduation in May, the scholarship had reached the endowed level. With proceeds from the golf tournament, the scholarship has grown and made the gift larger for the recipient.”

The scholarship is awarded to a Delaware resident who must have a GPA of 3.2 or higher to apply. When the scholarship was established, Mrs. Geyer-Jarrell said that she hoped the scholarship would help someone “who has worked just as hard as Andrew and has been able to give back to their community.”

The first tournament in 2014 raised almost $8,000 for the scholarship fund and the proceeds have increased each year since the inception of the tournament.
