Bayhealth Festival of Trees Supports employees

Bayhealth is currently hosting their 12th Annual Festival of Trees at Bayhealth Hospital, Kent Campus and Bayhealth Milford Memorial. This year’s festival features trees decorated by departments throughout Bayhealth with lights, tinsel, ribbons, ornaments, and bells. The program encourages a competition between departments as individuals from the public are able to vote for their favorite trees.

Proceeds from the Festival of Trees supports Bayhealth’s Employee Assistance Fund, a program that assists Bayhealth employees in times of distress or economic hardship.

“We wanted our tree to make a statement,” said Kathy Matthews, supervisor of volunteer services at Milford Memorial Hospital. For the 2ndyear in a row Matthews, along with her team of over 20 volunteers, designed an amazing Christmas tree for the Festival of Trees.  “We have even more trees than last year, and it’s constantly growing.”

Most of the departments at Milford Memorial decorate a tree. Tickets are then sold and the trees are raffled off right before Christmas. “It’s really kind of sweet,” said Matthews. “So many people don’t have the means for a tree or decorations,” said Matthews. The proceeds from the raffle benefit Bayhealth’s Employee Assistance Fund.

“The volunteers at Milford Memorial are just angels,” said Matthews. So, it makes perfect sense that their tree is designed to look like an Angel. “Carol Sikora [volunteer] was really the brain child of the project,” said Matthews.

“She came up with the design and was able to find a donated dress form.” The volunteers provided all of the ornaments and décor for the tree.” It was a group effort for sure,” said Sikora. “My husband Greg even helped me along the way.” Everyone really came together for this great cause. “We actually received more donations than we needed for the tree,” said Matthews. “But the lucky winner will get to take the extras home too.”

All of the trees are a sight to see. “So much talent and creativity goes into each one,” said Matthews. Everyone is welcome to view the trees which are located in the main entrance lobby and also by outpatient services. Tickets for the raffle are $1 each or $5 for 6 and can be purchased at the front desk.  The winners for raffle will be drawn on Thursday 12/20 at 12:30 pm. The festival is just a small part of what volunteers at Bayhealth do. There are many opportunities especially at the new campus. Volunteers are always needed and are more than welcome. For information on volunteering please call 302-430-5621.
