Banneker Receives Coat Donation for Needy Children

by Terry Rogers

This January Benjamin Banneker Elementary students provided 192 needy children with winter coats. All of the coats were donated by UNITED Church.

“Love Delaware until their heart beats like His,” Zach Childress, UNITED Church Campus Pastor, said. “These are the words that UNITED Church operate under on a daily basis. Looking to make an impact in their local community, UNITED Church was excited to recently partner with Craig Warrington along with the Milford School District.”

The church partnered with Operation Warm, an organization that focuses on giving confidence and hope to youth through winter jackets. Church staff distributed the jackets to students that ranged from Kindergarten through fifth grade who would otherwise not have a coat during the cold winter months.

“These types of donations are extremely beneficial to our students,” Craig Warrington, Visiting Teacher for Milford School District, said. “The generosity of others demonstrates how our community comes together to help our neediest children. These students will now come to school in a warm coat, ready to learn and, hopefully, gain an understanding of how important it is to give to those less fortunate when they are older. We are very thankful for UNITED Church and their volunteers who helped bring this project to life.”

UNITED Church has a second campus planned for the Milford area and Childress felt that this was a way to reach out to what will soon be a new community.

“This is just one of the multiple ways UNITED Church has found joy in serving the Milford community,” Childress said. “It gave us great joy to see the smiles on the children’s faces as we handed them their coats.”
