On Wednesday, January 30, friends and family gathered at the Houston Fire Company to celebrate the retirement of Phyllis Fisher who spent the past 57 years as a beautician in Milford. Former Senator Gary Simpson read and presented Fisher with a proclamation from the State of Delaware, commending her for her years of service to the community.

“I graduated from Milford High School in 1960 and attended the Dover School of Cosmetology,” Fisher said. “I initially thought about entering nursing school, but I realized I didn’t want to go through all the nursing I would have to in order to become a nurse. That led me to cosmetology school.”

Fisher’s first job as at Air Base Beauty Shop in Dover before opening her own shop on Route 14. She operated that shop for many years before joining her sister, Lucy, in her shop in Milford. Eventually, Fisher began working at Hair Designers, a shop owned by Carol Griffith Collins and then to Fabulous in the Airpark Plaza.

“It is at Fabulous that I will hang up my curling irons, combs and scissors,” Fisher said. “Over the years, I have had customers from ages 1 to 104. I have met some wonderful people over the years and formed some very close friendships that I will never forget. I want to thank each and every one of you for the years of memories, loyalty and thoughtful gifts through the years. I will truly miss you all.”

Fisher’s official retirement date was December 27, 2018.
