Jacob Callazo, a 17 year old from Milton, has been selected to receive the 2019 Governor’s Youth Volunteer Service Award. The award ceremony will be held on May 14, 2019 at the Polytech Adult Education Conference Center starting at 6:00 pm.
Over a 6 month period, Jacob has volunteered as an assistant instructor at a local karate school and completed 120+ hours of service to the community. Through Jacob’s volunteer work, he has helped 7-12 year olds learn karate, good work habits, positive attitude and other skills that will help them throughout their lives. He has also helped teens and adults from the community learn self-defense skills that could potentially save their lives.
When asked Jacob why he volunteers at Delaware Tang Soo Do Academy, he said, “It’s teaching me as much as it is them. It gives me great confidence to be able to contribute what I can into each of their lives, to know that the things they learn here will give them the confidence and discipline they will need when life gets harder for them. It’s a significant thing to be able to give to the community in this way. The things these young people learn will stick with them and make them safer. Understanding that, gives me pride in what I do.”
