DE Hospice Plans Memorial 5K Run

by Terry Rogers

On June 26, Delaware Hospice will hold the 11th Annual Memorial Walk and 5k Run at the Delaware Hospice Center, located at 100 Patriots Way in Milford. The event will include vendors, food and beer tastings from Mispillion River Brewing.

“Many of our families view the Delaware Hospice Center as a place where their loved ones were loved and well taken care of,” Jennifer Saienni, Marketing Communications Coordinator at Delaware Hospice, said. “By participating, the community is able to give back to the place that gave them so much quality time with their loved one. Many of our families have had to assume the role of not only daughter, spouse, nephew, but also caregiver. When a loved one comes to the Delaware Hospice, caregivers are able to leave that job at the door and just be the loved one. Our specialized staff are able to take on that role and provide the care their loved one needs.”

There will be hot dogs, Philly Pretzels and root beer floats available for purchase at the event while Mispillion River Brewing will be on hand to provide those over 21 tastings of their special beer brews. Both the Memorial Walk and the 5K Run will start at the entrance to the Delaware Hospice Center and travel through the neighboring community.

“We have such wonderful neighbors,” Saienni said. “The Veterans Home, the Boys and Girls Club of Milford are both allowing us to use their facilities and support us in the event. The 5K participants will continue down Patriots Way to Delaware Veterans Boulevard. It then takes a turn into West Liberty Road, turning around in the cul-de-sac and returning down West Liberty Road. They will then turn right onto Delaware Veterans Boulevard and continue to cross Airport Road, take a right onto Mullet Run, continuing around to the water stop. They turn around at that point and continue back down Mullet Run, returning the way they came back to Delaware Hospice Center. The total route is 3.1 miles.”

The Memorial Walk is designed for those who prefer not doing the 5K. It begins at Delaware Hospice Center, along Patriots Way, turning onto Delaware Veterans Boulevard. The walk then turns into the Boys and Girls Club property and walks along their walking path, returning on Patriots Way and through the Pathway of Memories, ending back at the center.

Pre-registration is open at and must be completed prior to June 24 to guarantee a t-shirt. Registration the day of the event begins at 5:30 PM. At 6:30 PM, the 5K starts and at 6:35 PM, the walk starts. All participants receive a t-shirt, food after the event and one drink. Fees for walkers who are age 6 and up are $20 and for runners 6 and up is $25. Delaware Hospice is offering an embroidered cotton resort tote bag with rope handles to anyone who voluntarily raises their registration fee to $50.
