MSD Students Experience New Schools

On Thursday, August 29 the Milford School District hosted Transition Day for students entering new schools. One of the largest transitions for students as well as families is the entry into Kindergarten. For many, it is the first school setting that their little one has experienced. In addition to families entering Kindergarten, students in first, sixth and ninth grades had the opportunity to explore their new schools solely with students in their own grade.

Transition events are provided for families to ensure there is a smooth transition between home and school. Whether it is a student returning to school in a new building and new grade level, or entering school for the first time, Milford School District aims to ensure their school experience is a positive one. Helping students acclimate to their new learning environment helps them to be more confident and know how to access the resources available to them.

“We had a phenomenal week with great student and family participation in our transition events.  Lots of positive energy from our students, staff and families was widespread throughout all of our schools,” said Kevin Dickerson, Superintendent of Milford School District.  “I am very proud of our staff for a terrific week of preparation for the school year.  We are excited for the school year to begin and look forward to welcoming all of our students on Tuesday.  Should be a fantastic school year for our students, we are ready.”

Kindergartener Conor Trap is excited for “meeting [his] new teachers and meeting new friends.” He is also interested in learning math. His mother is excited as well but also admits that she is “nervous; he is not a baby anymore.”

The parents of kindergartener Joan Mark are excited for their child’s first steps into the public education system as well as an introduction to a second language. She is part of the Spanish Immersion program where students learn their lessons in English for half of the day and Spanish the other half of the day.

“We are a little nervous but very excited for her to learn a second language,” said mother Alison Sleva. “I hope that she learns to communicate with other kids that she normally wouldn’t have.”

Bridget Amory, Director of Student Leaning at Milford School District, believes that Transition Days help students become more independent with their learning. “Establishing routines and helping our students create connections with staff from the start of school is just one more step to helping them take responsibility for their learning,” she said. “We pride ourselves on the quality of care and attention that we provide our students throughout their learning process and believe our transition events help our students and families experience this first hand.”

Tuesday, September 3 marks the official First Day of School for all students in the Milford School District. Start times for the 2019 Milford school year are as follows:

Morris-
8:25-3:20 – Student Instructional Day
Please note that Morris will dismiss at 1:00 pm on September 3 and 4 to assist with the transition to Kindergarten

Banneker, Mispillion, Ross
Students may enter the building after 7:15 am (This is especially useful if the student is eating breakfast at school)
Classes begin at 7:35 a.m.and Students are dismissed at 2:20 pm
Students arriving after 7:35 am are marked tardy and must be signed in at the office

Milford Central Academy
8:25 a.m. – 3:25p.m.

Milford High School
7:35 a.m. – 2:20 p.m.
