School is just starting, but it is already time for seniors to apply for scholarships. The Elks Most Valuable Student (MVS) award has one of the earliest scholarship deadlines of any major scholarship. The application is now open and is due November 5. It is an on-line process and is available at enf.elks.org/mvs . All high school seniors who are U.S. citizens may apply, including those from Milford, Lake Forest, the vocational or technical schools, charter and private schools as well as homeschools. Students do not need to be related to Elk members in order to be eligible for scholarships.
The Elks National Foundation awards $2.44 million annually. In 2020 the Foundation is offering four year MVS national scholarships as follows:
Two $50,000 scholarships ($12,500 per year)
Two $40,000 scholarships ($10,000 per year)
Two $30,000 scholarships ($7,500 per year)
14 – $20,000 scholarships ($5,000 per year)
480 – $ 4,000 scholarships ($1,000 per year)
In addition to these national scholarships, applicants are also eligible for Elk state association scholarships and the Milford lodge is offering five $1,000 scholarships for the awardee’s first year of college. These state and locally awarded scholarships will use the same application form as the National MVS awards, again located at the following website enf.elks.org/mvs.
In the past two years, the Milford Elks lodge has sponsored three national and two state association winners as well as the local lodge awardees. MVS scholarships are judged on academic scholarship, community service and financial need. James O’Neill, Elks Scholarship Committee Chair stated, “In today’s times, most students have a financial need. So I encourage all students to apply.” If anyone experiences difficulties with the application process, they are encouraged to contact the scholarship committee chair James O’Neill at 422-3207.
