Students at Mispillion Elementary School participated in a celebration of Veterans Day this past week.  Compliments of the efforts of Mispillion Teacher Mrs. Sharp and the school family involvement committee, students had the opportunity to connect with some of our local veterans while learning about service. Major Keith Bauer, active duty military guest speaker, spoke to the students about the power of service, whether it be formally in the military or by being a good friend.

Mrs. Sharp explained “Veterans Day is important to a lot of people, especially my family. My husband, Michael Sharp, is a Lt. Col. In the Delaware National Guard so we recognize on a daily basis how much he and our family sacrifice while he serves. Having a program like this at school helps our students to realize how important it is to honor our veterans and appreciate the sacrifices they make every day.”

During the program, local veterans and students were treated to student performances that included the National Anthem sung by Juliene Combs and a band performance of ‘My Country ‘Tis of Thee’ led by elementary band director, Mr. Mentzer and students Zack Soriano, trumpet, Brendan Stevenson, trumpet, Will Frederick, saxophone, and Ethan Garcia, saxophone.

Additionally, winning essays about Why Veterans Are Important to Me were shared by Amanda Lee and Olivia Eisenbrey. Forth grader Mackenzie Hayhurst shared “I think Veterans are important because without them we wouldn’t be able to be here safe. It was important to have a program like this because we were able to recognize the people who sacrifice to be able to keep us safe.”

The students listed below hosted Veterans at a small reception after the program.
