A fire truck from Carlisle Fire Company 42 that children could investigate, fuzzy alpacas asking to be petted, Batman, Spiderman and princesses were all on hand at the Ribbon cutting and Open House of Delaware Pediatric Dentistry on Saturday, December 21. Councilpersons Jason James and Katrina Wilson were on hand to cut the ribbon for this much anticipated new office. “This has been a two year process,” Dr. Gerardo Martinez said. “We had hoped to open over the summer but we had some delays. We are super excited to open the doors today so the residents of Milford can see what we have been up to”
Dr. Martinez and his partner, Dr. David Delgado, met while completing their pediatric dental residency training at UCLA in 2010. Both worked together in South Texas and now after some years working in different states reunite again to start this new venture. Dr. Martinez was encourage to look into moving to Delaware from long time family friend and local anesthesiologist, Matt Powell, MD. At his bequest the process was started. In 2016 Dr. Martinez moved to the State of Delaware and started to work for 2 offices in Dover and Millsboro. The commute had Dr. Martinez crossing Milford multiple times a week. Dr. Martinez saw the growth happening over the last 3 years and decided Milford would be home to their new office.
Both Dr. Delgado and Dr. Martinez say they chose Milford because it is centrally located in downstate Delaware. “Milford has many of the qualities we were looking for” Dr. Martinez recounts the story when the real estate agent showed them the location at Milford Square next to Big Lots, he almost cried as it fit the vision perfectly.
“We are the first pediatric dentists in Milford and we are thrilled to have that distinction,” Dr. Delgado said. “We take care of a very sensitive population and the biggest challenge in treating that population is behavior management. Children should be seen in their first year or when their first teeth appear. It is often important to educate parents as much as children about the need for dental hygiene. We want to educate the entire family, not just the child, about the need for good nutrition and dental hygiene. The child is our number one focus.”
Both Dr. Martinez and Dr. Delgado say that they look forward to serving the community and help bring a new approach to children’s oral health. The office participates with multiple insurance carriers and also has its own membership plan for those without insurance. Dr. Delgado has surgical privileges at both Kent General Hospital and Bayhealth Sussex Campus. If a child requires oral rehabilitation under general anesthesia, Dr. Delgado will be able to perform the procedures locally. In addition, the office has a bilingual staff ready to assist. The office will be open the afternoon of Monday, December 23 and for half a day on Tuesday, December 24th. Regular offices hours begin on Thursday, December 26. Office hours are 8 AM to 5 PM Monday through Friday. For more information call 302-315-2019 or email DelawarePD@gmail.com.
