MSD Plans Hybrid Graduation Ceremony

On May 18, Milford High School Principal Jesse Parsley explained to the Milford School District Board of Education that the school will provide the Class of 2020 with a graduation ceremony in light of the COVID-19 school closure. The decision to hold a ceremony was based on requests from an overwhelming number of students and parents.

“In our committee, every student and parent felt it was important to walk the green to receive a diploma,” Parsley said. “Over the weekend of June 12, students will arrive at Briggs Stadium with up to four family members. They will have their name announced and they will walk up to get their diploma. We will have a photographer there so the graduate will have photos of the event as well. We are then going to take the videos of each graduate as well as videos of the speeches from the Superintendent, valedictorian, salutatorian, class president. The chorus and band will also perform. We are going to create one video that will be live streamed on June 18 at 7 PM for anyone to watch.”

Parsley explained that he felt that the graduates would feel as if the live streamed ceremony was very similar to the ceremony they would have had if schools had remained open. It would give families the opportunity to gather and watch the ceremony as well. Dr. Kevin Dickerson, Superintendent, stated that parents will be handing diplomas to the graduate, an addition that he felt would make the ceremony even more special.

“The Class of 2020 has also said they want to have a more traditional 2020 graduate celebration,” Parsley said. “Once the health risks are minimized, they have asked us to plan a celebration in order to acknowledge their accomplishments.”

The school is still in the process of planning the Senior Cruise and more details about that will be released soon. In addition, the Senior Awards Ceremony will be live streamed through YouTube and will be available for viewing on June 9 at 7 PM. Links for the awards ceremony and graduation will be available on the Milford School District website as soon as they are available.
