Davis receives Excellence in Education Award

Michele Davis was the State of Delaware recipient of the Alpha Delta Kappa Excellence in Education Award during Spring 2020.  She represented the State of Delaware at the Regional competition and was awarded the Northeast Regional Excellence in Education Award, beating out teachers from Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and Vermont.  Michele will now move on to the next round of competitors at the Alpha Delta Kappa International Conference.

Alpha Delta Kappa is an international honorary organization of women educators dedicated to educational excellence.  The Excellence in Education Award recognizes members for their outstanding contributions to education.  To be eligible, the nominee must be an active member and be actively engaged in the education profession.  Mrs. Davis was nominated by fellow Alpha Delta Kappa Epsilon sorority sister, Tanya Humes, teacher at Cape Henlopen School District.

Mrs. Davis has been a teacher for 15 years with the Milford School District.  She currently teaches 5th Grade Inclusion at Lulu Ross Elementary.  After graduating from the University of Delaware with a degree in Economics, Michele began tutoring and became a paraprofessional while earning her master’s degree in special education.  In 2013 and 2018, Michele was named Milford School District’s Teacher of the Year.

“My favorite thing about being an educator is getting to watch students blossom, grow, and find their voice.  Every single student we work with has so much to offer and teach us,” says Davis.  As the new school year approaches, she recognizes it comes with a new set of demands.  “This school year is pushing me to extend beyond my comfort zone and learn many new things. I am excited to learn from the students and build a bank of resources that I can use to support future classes. Overall, the most exciting thing will be getting to work with the students again. “

“Mrs. Davis has represented Lulu Ross Elementary School and the Milford School District exceptionally well during her teaching career,” says Dr. Dickerson, MSD Superintendent.  “She remains student-centered throughout her instructional approaches as she consistently provides students with engaging learning activities and a supportive learning environment.  Excellence in Education personifies Mrs. Davis and we are fortunate to have her engaged with our students, families, colleagues and community.”

Lulu Ross Principal, Mrs. Cindy McKenzie says Michele has been a true asset to Lulu Ross.  “Her leadership and advocacy for the education of students of all abilities has made a significant impact on the special education programming at Ross Elementary.  Over the years she has served as a mentor and role model for her colleagues and has created positive relationships within our community through various family involvement activities, as well as through Special Olympics.”

The Alpha Delta Kappa International Conference will be held in the Summer of 2021 in Austin, Texas.
