On Saturday, October 31, dozens of volunteers helped distribute food boxes donated by the Food Bank of Delaware to members of the Milford community who were in need. The event, organized by New Genesis Rock of Love Christian Ministries, provided 1,500 boxes of food to those in need from 10 AM until 1 PM.

“This is great for our community,” Mayor Archie Campbell, who was loading boxes into vehicles as a volunteer, said. “We are feeding families in Milford right now. We had Public Works out here with forklifts placing the boxes so we could get them loaded and all of the people here right now are volunteering their time on a Saturday to help those in need.”

Each box contained apples, onions, cabbage, yogurt, cheese, scrapple, hot dogs and other items that would benefit each family. Each car was also given a gallon of milk as well. As vehicles drove up to the loading zone, they were asked how many in the family and a box was loaded for each person.

“Community involvement is critical right now,” Councilman Dan Mirabello, who was also volunteering at the drive, said. “People are struggling right now and we need to work together and help. We all have to help each other right now. It is very nice to see all this community spirit as we work together to help those who are less fortunate.”

The Feed the Community Campaign provided the food boxes on October 23, 29, 30 and 31st as well. Not only was food provided by the Food Bank, but donated by USDA and Vincent Farms.

Meg Kapel, who also volunteered at the event posted on Facebook that not only was the event fun, it felt good to be helping others get through rough times together and to watch “red and blue and others working together as it should be.”

Dwyane Powell, another volunteer, when asked why he was volunteering for the event said it was a better question to ask why someone would not volunteer.

“This is what we are supposed to do,” Powell said. “We need to work together through this crisis and with what is going on in this country. This shows that people still care. We have gotten away from what our parents taught us, from the foundation that we have to help each other. This is a good thing.”
