Food Bank of Delaware Plans Holiday Food Drives

by Terry Rogers

The Food Bank of Delaware has already begun food drives for the upcoming holidays, holding a virtual food drive in order to keep everyone safe during the COVID-19 pandemic. Chad Robinson, Community Relations Director, stated that people can donate online, allowing them to help those who are dealing with food shortages during the holiday while still staying safe.

“We also have a daily need for volunteers at our Milford and Newark locations,” Robinson said. “These individuals pack boxes, sort donations and similar tasks that need to be done. In addition, we have large mobile pantry events in Georgetown and Dover where we need assistance.”

Robinson explained that this year, more than previous years, food donations and volunteers are needed as the COVID-19 pandemic has increased the number of people who are in need of food for their household.

“In our previous fiscal year, prior to COVID-19, the Food Bank of Delaware distributed 8.6 million pounds of food,” Robinson said. “From March 16 through November 6, 2020, the Food Bank of Delaware has distributed over 11.8 million pounds. There have been 23,521 visits to our Healthy Pantry Center on site at the Food Bank in Newark and Milford. We have distributed 102,101 Coronavirus Food Assistance boxes and 89,300 weekend meal bags to children in need.”

On Monday, November 16 starting at 11 AM, the Food Bank of Delaware will hold a drive-thru mobile pantry at Crossroad Community Church in Georgetown starting at 11 AM. There will be no public restrooms and it is a first-come-first-served event. There is an online registration available although registering online does not guarantee service. Those who come to the event are asked to remain in their vehicle and have space in their trunk or rear seat. Another drive-thru mobile pantry is planned on Wednesday, November 18 at Dover International Speedway, also starting at 11. Follow signage on Route 13 to get to the Dover event.

Some of the food items the Food Bank is seeking during the holiday season include canned fruit like applesauce and cranberry sauce, hot and cold cereals, condiments, side dishes like macaroni and cheese, as well as turkeys and dessert products.
