With Gov. John Carney reacting to rapidly rising numbers of COVID-19 cases by saying sports had to cease from Dec. 14 through Jan. 11, the DIAA said fall sports championships will continue.

However, winter sports competition will not be allowed to start until Jan. 11.

Sports practices are permitted to continue as long as COVID-19 precautions of mask wearing and social distancing are strictly followed, according to an announcement Thursday evening from Carney and the Delaware Division of Public Health.

The Delaware Interscholastic Athletic Association soon released its reaction in a statement, saying it would follow the guidelines. The DIAA has responsibility for overseeing school sports.

“As always, the decision to participate in interscholastic athletics is a local school decision and there may be schools that pause sports for a period of time during this next month,” the release said.

The DIAA Board of Directors will discuss the winter sports season during next week’s board meeting on Thursday, Dec. 10.

“DIAA will continue to monitor the COVID-19 pandemic developments in consultation with Delaware Division of Public Health and Delaware Sports Medicine Advisory Committee,” the release said. “DIAA member schools are required to continue to follow the state’s order, DPH guidelines, DIAA’s regulations and their DPH approval facilities plan during this time.”
