The Delaware Department of Transportation announced that the new northbound bridge carrying U.S. Route 1 over Delaware Route 16 east of Milton will open to traffic on Wednesday, April 15.

Motorists traveling northbound on Route 1 should expect delays beginning Tuesday evening, April 14, as crews work to shift traffic onto the new alignment.

The project, part of the Route 1/16 grade-separated intersection improvement, began in June 2022 with the goal of improving safety and reducing congestion at what had been a high-crash, signalized intersection. According to the Delaware Department of Transportation, the location recorded the highest overall crash rate and the highest number of injury crashes of all Route 1 intersections between Prime Hook and Five Points in Lewes from 2012 to 2019.

With the opening of the new bridge, transportation officials noted that a total of 36 signalized intersections between I-95 and Five Points in Lewes have now been eliminated since construction began on the Route 13 Relief Route project in 1987.

The more than $40 million project is expected to be fully completed this summer.
