Freeman Arts Pavilion’s Arts & Jazz Festival Set for Aug. 18

Visual art and live jazz will come together at the Freeman Arts Pavilion on Aug. 18 as the venue hosts its annual Arts & Jazz Festival.

The event is scheduled from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Selbyville outdoor venue and will showcase artwork from Delmarva artists alongside performances from regional and nationally recognized jazz musicians.

Festival organizers say attendees will have the opportunity to browse works by local visual artists while enjoying live music throughout the evening.

Among this year’s featured performers are jazz vibraphonist Joe Baione and vocalist Vanessa Rubin. Baione is known for leading The Joe Baione Vibraphone Experience and recently released his latest album, Vibe Check. Rubin, an acclaimed jazz vocalist with nine recordings as a leader, has performed internationally and received a 2020 NAACP Image Award nomination for Outstanding Jazz Album for The Dream Is You.

The festival will also include a performance by JazzReach’s Metta Quintet, which will present “An Evening with Metta Quintet: Celebrating 100 Years of Coltrane.” The performance commemorates the 100th anniversary of legendary saxophonist John Coltrane’s birth, highlighting his lasting influence on jazz through interpretations by the New York-based ensemble.

Rounding out the musical lineup is the 287th Delaware’s Own Army Band NOLA Brass Band. The military ensemble traces its history to 1921 and has performed both in the United States and internationally, offering a variety of musical ensembles as part of the Delaware National Guard.

In addition to the performances, the festival is seeking visual artists interested in participating. Vendor applications are currently being accepted through Freeman Arts Pavilion.
