Beebe’s Structural Heart Program First to Use New Technology to Reduce Stroke Risk

Beebe Healthcare’s Cardiovascular team is the first in Delaware or Maryland to utilize the WATCHMAN FLX Pro implant on Feb. 7.

The WATCHMAN FLX Pro is a left atrial appendage closure device that is used to treat patients who have been diagnosed with non-valvular atrial fibrillation. Also known as AFib, this heart rhythm disorder increases risk for stroke and requires that many patients rely on anticoagulation medications, long-term.

“Beebe is excited to offer the enhanced WATCHMAN FLX Pro left atrial appendage closure device, which features Hemocoat technology to help decrease clot formation, decrease inflammation, and promote faster healing after the implant,” said Mouhanad Freih, MD, Structural Heart Medical Director at Beebe Healthcare. “This device also offers enhanced imaging and additional sizing options to meet the needs of more patients.”

The WATCHMAN FLX Pro is the latest addition to Beebe’s technologically advanced implants to provide the best care for the people in Sussex County.

Beebe introduced use of the WATCHMAN device in 2018 and recently celebrated its 200th left atrial appendage closure procedure. Recently, a patient also received the Amulet device implantation in December 2023, which means Beebe’s structural heart team can more effectively treat patients with left atrial openings that vary in depth and size.
