DanceCompany-X, a Milford-based nonprofit dance organization, is set to debut its first-ever triple bill ballet performance at the Riverfront Theater on May 23 and 24. The company, housed within First State Dance Academy, has curated a powerful and diverse program that highlights three distinct works—“Rhapsody in Blue,” “Carmina Burana,” and “Carnival of the Animals.”

Artistic Director and award-winning choreographer Michele Xiques Arnold, who also owns First State Dance Academy, leads the creative vision behind the show. Arnold choreographed two of the three pieces herself, while “Rhapsody in Blue” was a collaborative effort with instructor Jessica Jones. The performance combines ballet, jazz, and theatrical storytelling for a night that promises something for everyone.

“This is our first triple bill we’ve ever done,” said Arnold. “It’s not a themed performance—each piece brings a different style of dance, choreography, and music. We wanted to create a show with variety that speaks to different audience preferences.”

The performance will include pauses between the pieces, featuring live piano accompaniment or interlude music while dancers rest and reset. Audience members can also look forward to refreshments and small items available for purchase in the lobby.

Among the highlights is “Carmina Burana,” a powerful ballet en pointe featuring sharp, dramatic movements that mirror the emotional depth of the music. The recorded soundtrack includes vocals—featuring Arnold’s brother—adding a personal touch to the production.

“Carnival of the Animals,” the second piece, brings a lighter, playful tone. Dancers, including children, wear animal face masks that they hold or set down during solos before rejoining in a whimsical group finale.

The final piece, “Rhapsody in Blue,” blends classical ballet and jazz in a Broadway-style format that tells a charming and spirited story. “It’s something you might see on a Broadway stage,” Arnold explained. “It’s engaging and fun, with that iconic music bringing it all together.”

DanceCompany-X holds open auditions for dancers age two and older, providing opportunities for performers of all ages and skill levels to participate. A few adult performers are featured in the upcoming show, highlighting the company’s inclusive approach.

Rehearsals for the Triple Bill began in late January and ramp up in May as the company prepares to welcome audiences from Milford and beyond. “We’re buckling down to make sure we deliver the best show possible to our community,” Arnold said.

Arnold is a two-time recipient of the Delaware Division of the Arts Award for Choreography and is recognized as an established choreographer in the state. With more than 20 years of presence in Milford through First State Dance Academy, she and her company have built a loyal local following.

The Triple Bill will be performed at the Riverfront Theater in Milford on Friday, May 23 at 7 p.m. and Saturday, May 24 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $18 for reserved seating and can be purchased at dancetix.booktix.com. For more information, call 302-422-2633.
