Drivers in Sussex County will have two opportunities to brush up on road safety skills this December when the Delaware Safety Council hosts Advanced Defensive Driving refresher classes at Delaware State Police Troop 7. The courses will take place on Thursday, December 11, 2025, in the Troop 7 Community Room.
Two sessions will be offered. The first class runs from 12:45 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. The second class runs from 5:45 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. The cost is 30 dollars per person. All enrollments must be completed in advance for the class a participant wishes to attend.
These refresher classes are certified by the Delaware Division of Motor Vehicles and the Delaware Office of the Insurance Commissioner. Completion meets all state requirements for insurance discounts of up to 15 percent, which are mandated by Delaware law. To qualify, drivers must have completed a Delaware DMV certified defensive driving course within the past five years.
The curriculum focuses on safe driving practices, collision avoidance, current traffic laws, reaction time, understanding modern vehicle technology, and real-world examples of roadway decision-making. The refresher format is designed to help drivers improve habits behind the wheel and reduce the risk of accidents.
The Delaware Safety Council has offered defensive driving education for generations. The nonprofit organization was established in 1919 and has provided driver safety programs to Delaware residents since the 1930s. Continuing to offer classes in community settings allows drivers of all ages to access training that can increase confidence on the road.
Insurance savings remain an important motivation for many participants. A refresher course can help eligible motorists reduce annual premiums with many major insurance providers. Additionally, Troop 7’s location offers convenient access for residents of Lewes, Rehoboth Beach, Milton, Harbeson, and surrounding areas.
Course organizers encourage early enrollment since space is limited for both sessions. The Delaware Safety Council continues to expand its programming throughout the state with in person classes, safety workshops, and outreach initiatives designed to help keep Delaware roads safer.
