We have went through and picked the top 15 games from the 2022-23 high school sports season. Below you will see the games we selected with some statistics and a short recap of why these games were our top picks. Most of these games are rewatchable either on our YouTube Channel or on the NFHS Network (Subscription necessary) if you would like to see them.
No. 15 William Penn vs Howard Basketball (YouTube)
This January 31st game didn’t disappoint as these two top 10 teams raced up and down the court in an overtime classic. Rasheen Matthews JR led the Wildcats with 15 points in their 58-56 win.
No. 14 Padua vs Saint Mark’s Basketball (YouTube)
They met on January 10th at Saint Marks. The Spatans were 8-1 on the season while the Pandas were looking to get to the .500 mark. This game would go to triple overtime where the Spartans would pull away with a 70-59 win. Grace Trerotola would score 34 points for the Pandas with 6 3 pointers and a perfect 8 for 8 from the line. She hit a 3 at the buzzer to send it to overtime then did it again to send it to third overtime. Lauren McDonald led the Spartans with 22 points
No. 13 Appoquinimink vs Archmere Girls Soccer
On May 15th in Claymont in one of the best soccer games of the year. Emma Gioffre scored in the 27th minute to give the Auks the 1-0 lead. Appoquinmink would tie it in the 60th minute then win it in the 80th minute on a corner kick goal by Avery Holland who came up from her defensive position to win the game with the last 30 second goal.
No. 12 Laurel vs Seaford Boys Basketball (YouTube)
Basketball The second sold out game between these two teams with the south title on the line. The Blue Jays would walk away with a 89-76 win to capture the Henlopen South title.
No. 11 Delmarva Christian vs Caravel Softball (YouTube)
In a battle of the top 2 teams in the state. The Bucs would tie the game at 4 in the bottom of the seventh on a Brooke Holdsworth home run then won it on a Veronica Diomede walk off single in the eighth inning.
No. 10 Caravel vs Tatnall Girls Basketball (YouTube)
This top 5 basketball game happened 3 days into 2023 and it was a defensive game. The Hornets would get the 37-36 win on a Emma Kirby free throw with a second left in the game.
No. 9 Salesianum vs Caesar Rodney (CR) Wrestling (YouTube)
CR upsets Sals wrestling. Riders pull two big upsets. 126 Copes beats No. 1 Davis in OT and 150 Waski pins No.1 Munch in 3rd period after trailing the entire match.
No. 8 Caravel vs Appoquinimink Boys Basketball (YouTube)
The theme of overtime basketball games saw another one on January 24th as Appoquinimink battled Caravel in a great top 10 matchup. The Jags would pull out a 71-62 win as Riley Buzby scored 17 points off the bench including 9 of 10 free throws most of them in overtime to help keep the lead and the victory.
No. 7 Sallies vs Cape Henlopen Boys Lacrosse State Championship (NFHS)
The boys lacrosse championship didn’t disappoint as the Sals and Vikings played another instant classic. The Sals overcame a 2 goal deficit in the fourth quarter to pull out a 13-10 win
No. 6 Friends vs Caravel Football 2A Football State Championship (NFHS)
The 2A football championship live up to its bill as The Quakers and the Bucs defenses didn’t disappoint on a December night. The Quakers scored on their first 2 possessions and held a Bucks rally off in their 10-7 championship win. Robbie Tattersall had 115 yards on 23 carries and threw for 117 tards on 13-21 passing.
No. 5 Archmere vs Howard Football (YouTube)
The Auks had a 15 game winning streak as they headed to Abinsseno stadium on September 24th. RJ Matthews ran for 3 first half touchdowns and the Wildcats held off an Auks rally winning 38-34. Chris Albero finished with 260 yards passing and 45 yards rushing with 4 total touchdowns.
No. 4 Sallies vs Middletown Boys Basketball Semi Final (NFHS)
The state semifinal didn’t disappoint as these two teams went back and forth for 32 minutes. Sallies’ Isaiah Hynson hit the game winner with less than 5 seconds to go.
No. 3 Smyrna vs Cape Henlopen Girls DI Field State Championship (NFHS)
Cape came into this game winning 5 consecutive DI state championships. After full time the game was tied at 1-1 to force overtime. With 10.57 to go in the first overtime Kirsten Johnson made a miraculous goal as Dru Moffett sent a centering pass from the far right side she laid out fully extended to knock the ball in the back of the net to give Smyrna their first-ever field hockey state championship with a 2-1 score. That play was probably the top play of the year in all sports in the 2022-23 season
No. 2 Salesianum vs Cape in Wrestling Duals State Championship (NFHS)
Just one week after losing on the road, Sals came back to beat Cape in the state finals in the last match of the dual to win the state championship.
No. 1 Tatnall vs Cape Henlopen Girls Lacrosse State Championship (NFHS)
Girls Lacrosse saw an impressive streak come to an end. The Vikings last state loss came to St Andrews in 2009. They have won every girls lacrosse title since 2009 when they beat that St Andrews team in the championship. The Hornets scored with 3:34 left then played keep away from Cape to beat the Vikings 10-9. The Hornets outscored the Vikings 5-2 in the second half.
