Delaware State Police Investigating Fatal Pedestrian Collision

Staff WriterPolice & Fire, RSS

Delaware State Police are investigating a fatal motor vehicle collision involving a pedestrian that occurred in the New Castle area on Wednesday night.

On February 15, 2023, at approximately 11:46 p.m., a 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee was traveling in the right lane of northbound New Castle Avenue (Route 9), just north of West Avenue. At the time, a 40-year-old New Castle man was walking northbound on the right shoulder of New Castle Avenue. As the vehicle neared the location of the pedestrian, he walked into the right northbound lane of travel and directly into the path of the Jeep. The front of the Jeep struck the pedestrian.

The 40-year-old male pedestrian was pronounced deceased at the scene. Identification of the victim is pending notification of the next of kin. The pedestrian did not cross at a crosswalk, was wearing dark clothing, and was not carrying a light at the time of the collision. Impairment of the victim appears to be a factor.

New Castle Avenue between West Avenue and Hillview Drive was closed for approximately 3 hours while the collision scene was investigated, and the roadway was cleared.

The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit continues to investigate this incident. Troopers are asking anyone who witnessed this collision to please contact Corporal Santangelo by calling 302-633-5000.
