Delaware State Police Mourns the Loss of Master Corporal Bret McAfee

It is with great sadness that the Delaware State Police announces the death of 54-year-old Master Corporal Bret McAfee, a 27-year veteran of the Delaware State Police. On June 15, 2023, he passed away peacefully in the comfort of his home, with his loved ones by his side, just two weeks after his retirement. “It is with deep sorrow and a sense of heaviness that we share the devastating news of Master Corporal McAfee’s untimely passing,” said Colonel Melissa A. Zebley, Superintendent of the Delaware State Police. “He was a Trooper of remarkable qualities, committed to serving the people of Delaware with honor and integrity. His unwavering commitment and excellent work ethic are what makes us all proud to be a part of the Delaware State Police. Our hearts are heavy as we grieve the loss of Bret. We humbly request that the community keep his family and the Delaware State Police in their thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.”

Master Corporal McAfee was hired on March 16, 1996, into the 65th Delaware State Police Recruit Class. He successfully completed his training before moving on to Troop 3 and Troop 9 for field training. Upon completion, he was permanently assigned to uniformed patrol at Troop 3, where he was the longest-serving patrol trooper at Troop 3. During his journey, he provided guidance and education to many new police officers, equipping them with the necessary skills and knowledge to tackle real-life situations. In addition to his patrol duties, he joined the Critical Incident Stress Management team on June 21, 2010, and the Conflict Management Team on October 19, 2010. We extend our gratitude to his family for allowing us to work alongside him. Despite our profound sense of loss, we will carry on his legacy.
