The University of Delaware Blue Hens men’s basketball team clinched the CAA title last night with a win over UNC-Wilmington 59-55. The Blue Hens were led by Jy’are Davis who scored 18 points and Andrew Car who had 17 points to go with twelve rebounds. The win gives Delaware the automatic berth for the CAA conference, sending them to the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2014.

Davis was named the tournament MVP scoring 17 points in a win over Drexel, 14 points in a win over Towson, and as mention 18 points in the championship game over UNC-Wilmington. Jy’aire’s biggest shot of the tournament came with 1:01 left in the championship to give the Hens the 56-55 lead scoring the last points of the game.

Davis is a local star from his high school days at Sanford. He played 5 seasons at Sanford on the varsity getting playing time as an eight grader. In those 5 years he became the only player in Delaware history to earn four first team All-State accolades.  Jy’are also helped Sanford win 2 state titles with a possible third when the 2020 season was cut short by the covid pandemic.

Jy’are was named CAA rookie of the week for the last 5 weeks of the regular season which led to him being named CAA rookie of the Year. Davis posted double-doubles in consecutive wins over JMU and Elon while scoring a season high 23 points over UNC-Wilmington in the season finale.

The blue hens will now wait to see who they will face in the NCAA tournament as they will be dancing. The selection show for the NCAA tournament will be this Sunday at 6 p.m. on CBS. Tune in to support your Blue Hens
