MILFORD, Del. (Aug. 27, 2025) — Downtown Milford will be buzzing this weekend with three community-focused events that highlight the town’s growing arts, retail, and cultural scene.

At the heart of the festivities is The Crafty Reader, Milford’s indie bookstore in the Shops of Penny Square, which is marking its first anniversary. Owner Kori Lewandowski said she can hardly believe it has been a year since she opened the doors at 39 N. Walnut St.

“It’s hard to believe that we’ve already been open a year. In some ways it feels like it’s only been a day, and in other ways, it feels like it has been forever,” Lewandowski said. “I’ve learned so much about business and books in the last year and have made such wonderful connections with the community.”

The store is celebrating all month with discounts and events, including an Aug. 30 anniversary party featuring story times, children’s and adult crafting, and specials throughout the day. More details can be found at CraftyReaderDE.com.

Meanwhile, across the street at the Riverfront Theater, the Second Street Players Youth Theater will stage Villain School by Brian D. Taylor. Directed by Guy Crawford, the quirky family comedy follows young villains-in-training learning the ropes of being wicked. Performances run Friday through Sunday, Aug. 29–31, at 2 S. Walnut St. Tickets are available through the Second Street Players’ box office.

Shoppers can also enjoy the First Annual Autumn Social at The Collective, a boutique at 33 N. Walnut St. that has quickly become a downtown favorite. Founders Ashlee Payton and Brynn Byerly, who merged their Lewes businesses to create the store, are celebrating the season with 10 percent off purchases Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Guests who spend $100 or more will receive a $5 gift card to Dolce Bakery, with fall-inspired bites and sips available throughout the day.

Sade Truitt, executive director of Downtown Milford, Inc., said the weekend showcases how small businesses, arts groups, and community events bring energy to the city’s core.

“This is exactly the kind of vibrancy we love to see downtown,” Truitt said. “Milford thrives when people come together to celebrate our shops, our theater, and our shared sense of community. A weekend like this shows why our downtown is such a special place.”

With milestone celebrations, youth theater, and a boutique social all within walking distance, Truitt said, Milford is ready to welcome families and visitors for a weekend that offers something for everyone.
