DOVER — Delaware State University’s Cooperative Extension, in collaboration with Kent County Master Gardener Volunteers, recently held a hands-on small-space gardening workshop aimed at helping residents make the most of limited growing areas.

The event took place at the DSU Downtown Community Garden and offered interactive demonstrations tailored to patios, balconies, and compact yards.

The workshop introduced participants to four practical gardening methods: lasagna gardening, vertical gardening, square-foot gardening, and container gardening. Attendees rotated through each station, where experienced Master Gardener Volunteers provided step-by-step guidance and shared tips for successful small-scale gardening.

“Workshops like this show the power of hands-on learning and community engagement,” said Megan Pleasanton, Master Gardener Coordinator at DSU.

“Whether you have a balcony or just a few containers, everyone walked away with the tools and confidence to grow something, and that’s what this program is all about. Our goal was to show that you don’t need a big yard to grow your own food or flowers. With just a little creativity and the right techniques, anyone can garden, no matter how small the space, as long as you have the right conditions.”

Participants praised the workshop for being informative and accessible, regardless of gardening experience.

“I didn’t think I had space to garden, but now I feel like I can do it,” said one participant. “The tips were easy to follow, especially vertical gardening. And I can’t wait to try them at home.”
