Delaware Technical Community College’s baseball team finished the 2021 season as runners-up in the NJCAA Region 19 tournament. Now the program has more accolades, as five players have been named to the NJCAA Region 19 All-Region teams.
First team honors went to designated hitter Christopher Friend and outfielder Jonathan Golebiowski. Friend, a graduate of Caesar Rodney High School, finished the season with a .286 batting average, 11 home runs, 37 RBI, and 30 hits. Golebiowski, a graduate of Delaware Military Academy, finished the season with a .314 batting average, 12 home runs, 37 RBI, and 38 hits.
“Chris can really hit and seemed to find himself in the box in a lot of big spots, and more often than not stepped up and got the job done,” Head Coach Stu Madden said. “And Johnny really developed his whole game this year. Not only can he just flat out hit, but he also turned himself into a very good outfielder.”
Second team honors went to outfielder Mike Pagliei, a graduate of Brandywine High School. Pagliei batted .298 with 23 RBI and 39 hits.
“Mike earned everything that came his way this year,” Madden said. “He was a catalyst for us in the leadoff spot and covered a ton of ground in centerfield.”
Honorable mention honors went to third baseman Matt Rodriguez and catcher Ethan Watkinson. Rodriguez, a graduate of Delmar High School, batted .327 with 34 hits and 19 RBI. Watkinson, a graduate of Sussex Central High School, battled an injury for much of the season, but still batted .349 with 22 hits, 18 RBI, and four home runs.
“Matt was consistent all year at the plate,” Madden said. “He found a way to come through in big spots a lot, especially late in the season when it mattered most.
“And the fact that Ethan was voted in after missing half of the season due to injury, speaks volumes to the impact he makes on the field. He is a difference maker on both sides of the ball.”
