Goldey-Beacom College (GBC) has been named as one of five Transform Mid-Atlantic member institutions to receive an AmeriCorps Martin Luther King Jr. (MLK) Day of Service grant which aims to engage students, faculty and community members in a day of service, learning and celebration of Dr. King’s enduring legacy.
Funding for the grant opportunity was competitively awarded to TMA and six other higher education networks belonging to the Partnership Alliance by the Corporation for National and Community Service (AmeriCorps). With Engage New Jersey serving as the lead agency, TMA and the Partnership Alliance were awarded three-year, annually awarded $250,000 grant with the purpose of honoring the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The funded programs propose to engage a total of over 6,500 students across 11 states for Martin Luther King Jr. Day on January 15, 2024, that support underserved and marginalized individuals and communities.
Goldey-Beacom President Colleen Perry Keith reflected on a 1957 sermon delivered by Dr. King saying, “He said, ‘Life’s most persistent and urgent question is: ‘What are you doing for others?’” Dr. Keith continued, “That question is important to us at Goldey-Beacom, and it’s important for us to pose the question to our students. The answer to that question helps us all to appreciate the power of the service we can and do provide: small acts of kindness or large acts of transformational service all serve to contribute to stronger and better communities and relationships. This generous grant from TMA helps us to more fully live into the answer to that important question.”
GBC’s grant for $5,000 will support campus-community volunteer events on Monday, January 15, 2024. Activities include:
Clean-Up and Peace March with West Side Grows and I Am My Sister’s Keeper (MSK)
A community clean-up will commence at the MSK Community Center immediately followed by a two-mile peace march from 12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m. leading back to the community center for a celebration featuring local artists, live music and special guest speakers presented by Delaware Music Network. The event includes community resources, advocacy opportunities, family-friendly activities and a free community meal.
InnerSource Wellness Center
Founder of the Center, Dr. Melvina M. Brown, is an adjunct professor at Goldey-Beacom College. The Center is an urban farm with Permaculture Land that possesses the comfort of a natural energy flow which benefits all aspects of health, wellness and healing. Volunteers will participate in various activities including:
• Tour of the homestead
• Recycling of branches/building a fire
• Prepping pots for spring planting
• Yoga
• Drum Circle
• Movie Showing – “Inhabit a Permaculture” with popcorn and hot apple cider
The GBC bus will leave the campus Event Center at 9:30 a.m. bound for several activities downtown Wilmington and the InnerSource Wellness Center on Skyline Drive, Wilmington.
