Milford day

Annual Health and Wellness Day at the Food Bank of Delaware will connect residents with screenings, food, clothing and community organizations

MILFORD, Del. — Milford-area residents can receive free health screenings, food, clothing and other assistance Wednesday as Highmark Health Options brings its annual Health and Wellness Day to the Food Bank of Delaware.

The free community event will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 30, at the Food Bank of Delaware, 102 Delaware Veterans Blvd. in Milford.

The event is designed to bring health care and social-service organizations together in one location, making it easier for residents to connect with services that can affect their health and quality of life.

More than health screenings

In addition to free health screenings, visitors will be able to receive food boxes, hygiene products, clothing and books.

Organizations also will provide information and assistance related to women’s health, mental health, substance use and other community needs.

More than a dozen organizations are expected to participate, including the Food Bank of Delaware, First State Community Action Agency, Network Connect, Black Girl Health Collective, Cornerstone Community Center, Fostering Wishes and Sussex Pride.

The event reflects a growing emphasis among health organizations on addressing factors outside a doctor’s office — including access to nutritious food, stable housing, transportation and other basic needs — that can affect a person’s overall health.

Connecting underserved Delawareans with resources

Highmark Health Options has supported a number of community organizations through its Health Equity Fund, an initiative aimed at addressing health disparities and expanding access to services, particularly for uninsured and underserved Delawareans.

The annual Milford event gives residents an opportunity to connect directly with some of those organizations and learn what assistance may be available locally.

Highmark Health Options has operated in Delaware since 2015 and says it now serves approximately 115,000 Medicaid members across the state.
