According to Dr. Jason Peel, Director of Human Services and School Climate at Milford School District, the State of Delaware has been very supportive of education staff when it comes to the availability of the COVID-19 vaccination. Dr. Peel explained that the state is also seeing a large increase the supply of vaccines making it easier for teachers and staff to get vaccinations.
“Through large events at Dover Downs on March 13 and 14, also with some emails sent out March 12 opening up Walgreen’s sites for educators to get vaccinated, we are seeing the state be very proactive when it comes to getting our teachers vaccinated,” Dr. Peel said. “Some of the second shots would have occurred the week of spring break or the week afterward.”
Dr. Peel stated that any teacher or staff member at Milford School District who expressed a desire to be vaccinated has had the opportunity to do so. In addition, statewide testing is continuing in multiple locations. Dr. Peel explained that when the district learns of new sites for testing, that information is shared throughout the district.
“We are just very thankful that the state chose to prioritize the vaccination for educators,” Dr. Kevin Dickerson, Superintendent, said. “If you have read the news, they have really sped up the process for educators and made it much easier for them to get the vaccine if they want to do so. We really hope it helps anyone who has desired to get the vaccine.
Currently, anyone 50 years or older is eligible to receive the vaccine as are healthcare personnel. Frontline essential workers are also eligible including educators, school staff, childcare workers, first responders, food service, construction, transportation and anyone at risk due to an inability to work from home, frequent contact with the public and underlying health conditions. Governor John Carney announced that as of April 6, any person 16 or older would be eligible to receive the vaccine.
