Young singers in southern Delaware will soon have a new opportunity to perform and develop their musical talents with the launch of the Southern Delaware Children’s Chorus this fall at The Music School of Delaware’s Milford campus.

The chorus, open to children ages 6 to 12, will begin rehearsals Sept. 29 and will provide vocal instruction while giving participants opportunities to perform throughout the community.

The program will be directed by Cheryl Max, who will focus on age-appropriate vocal training while helping children build confidence, musical skills and teamwork.

“A children’s chorus should be alive with discovery,” said Max. “Young singers are learning how to use their voices, but they are also learning to listen, take risks, and trust one another. I want every child to know that their voice is important and that the ensemble needs what only they can bring. When all of those individual voices come together, children experience the pride of creating something larger than themselves. I cannot wait to begin.”

In addition to weekly rehearsals, chorus members will perform at community events and Music School programs throughout the year, giving students experience performing in front of audiences.

Mary Jane Vanvestraut, director of community engagement and director of The Music School of Delaware’s Milford campus, said the program is intended to expand opportunities for young musicians in Sussex County.

“Children across southern Delaware deserve more opportunities to make ambitious, joyful music together,” said Vanvestraut. “This chorus will offer exceptional instruction, but it will also create something equally important: a place for young people to belong and to discover that their voices have value. We are eager to see new friendships begin and watch as these young singers become a vibrant part of the musical life of our community.”

Children interested in joining the chorus will complete a voice assessment with Max before rehearsals begin. School officials said the assessment allows students to meet the director and become familiar with the program before joining the ensemble.

The Southern Delaware Children’s Chorus will rehearse Tuesdays from 4 to 5:30 p.m. at The Music School of Delaware’s Milford campus, 23 N. Walnut St. Tuition is $450, with payment plans and tuition assistance available.

Families interested in scheduling a voice assessment or learning more about the program may contact the Milford campus at 302-422-2043 or visit the Music School of Delaware’s website.
