Milford Museum & Milford Welcome Center’s New Location

The Milford Museum shifts locations, doubling its size and a soft opening planned for mid-July at 400 NE Front Street.

MILFORD, DE: The Milford Museum, previously located on 121 S Walnut St, is being moved to the location of the former police station on 400 NE Front Street.

The new location offers 12,000 square feet compared to the museum’s previous 5,000 square foot space. This allows for the museum to offer expanded exhibit space, administrative offices, and more storage areas for historical artifacts.

The main focus of the museum’s exhibits will continue to be Milford’s military history, shipbuilding history, and relevant history of the community.

With the decrease in state funding in recent years, the museum currently relies on state redevelopment funds, operating support from the city, and donations and fundraising efforts.

With the expanded space and more accessible location on the way to the downtown, some future plans include community events and meetings, educational programming, partnerships with local groups, and possibly outdoor historical experiences.

The Executive Director of the Milford Museum, Tom Summers, previously worked with the Delaware Public Archives for 30 years and also as a cultural resources manager for the Delaware State Parks.

Mr. Summers noted the importance of having the museum share a space with the local chamber of commerce, as the inflow of business leaders can help build a bond between the corporate community and the museum.

“I think once we get into this new building, the effort is going to be worthwhile because I think more people would say, ‘That’s a great place to be.” said Mr. Summers on the improved opportunity for local history access in the Milford area that can come from museum relocation effort.

A soft-opening is scheduled for sometime in mid to late July, with a grand opening likely occurring later in 2026.
