Delaware State Police arrested 37-year-old Matthew Hazzard from Newark, Delaware, for felony assault following a road rage incident on Saturday night.
On September 30, 2023, at approximately 10:20 p.m., troopers responded to an area hospital for a reported stabbing. When troopers arrived, they observed the 25-year-old male victim of Newark lying in a hospital bed with significant stab wounds. The investigation revealed that the victim was traveling on I-95 and approaching Chapman Road in Newark. He merged and entered Chapman Road in the lane where Matthew Hazzard was traveling. A short time later, the victim came to a stop at the intersection of Chapman Road and Christian Road due to a red traffic light. While stopped, Hazzard approached the victim’s vehicle and banged on the window. The victim exited the car, and the two began to argue. During this altercation, Hazzard produced a knife and stabbed the victim. The victim re-entered his vehicle and as he was driving away, Hazzard punctured one of the tires with the knife. The victim was able to escape and seek medical attention. On October 1, 2023, Hazzard turned himself in at Troop 2 after discussing the incident with the troopers. He was charged with the following crimes:
- Possession of a Deadly Weapon During the Commission of a Felony (Felony)
- Assault Second Degree (Felony)
- Carry a Concealed Dangerous Instrument
- Criminal Mischief Under $1000
Hazzard was arraigned by Justice of the Peace Court 11 and released on a $41,500 secured bond after posting bail.
