Strong fourth quarter lifts Caravel

Laurel made the long trip north to face Caravel for a Thursday night matchup boys basketball matchup. Laurel was not slowed down by the long bus ride coming out hot, outscoring Caravel 18-8 in the first quarter while taking a 35-34 lead into halftime. Laurel was able to get to the basket with ease scoring all their first half points without hitting a single three pointer. 

 

Laurel continued to control the lead throughout the third quarter using the same game plan driving to the basket in hopes to make the layup or get fouled and go to the free throw line. They did connect on three 3’s in the quarter with Kylse Wilson hitting two and Joel Parker hitting the other. 

 

The fourth quarter however would be all Caravel. After going 0-6 for the first three quarters from behind the arc Caravel’s John Clemmons hit his first three of the game which tied the game at 53-53 with 4:49 left in the fourth quarter. 

 

Laurel had an answer though they were able to score 6 straight points as Wilson hit two shots then dished an assist to Corey Mumford. After that Caravel called a timeout to stop the momentum. Caravel would tie the game back up after that timeout as Dominique Wyatt hit a three and Clemmons hit his second to tie the game for the second time 59-59 with 2:29 left in the fourth. Clemmons then stole the inbounds pass and got fouled going to the basket which sent him to the free throw line Clemmons connected on both free throws giving the Buccaneers their first lead of the game at 61-59. 

 

Caravel was able to hold off the Bulldogs the rest of the way to get a huge comeback win against a top 10 ranked team at home. The Buccaneers out scored the Bulldogs 27-11 in the fourth quarter to come away with a 69-62 victory.

 

Caravel was led by Clemmons who ended the game with 21 points shooting 5-6 from the free throw line while Wyatt scored 19 points and was 6-6 from the free throw line. 

 

Laurel was led by Mumford with 19 points while Dontarius Jones added 16.
