Georgetown, DE –  With a small-but-mighty team here at the Delaware SBDC, great leadership is what continues to help our program grow and succeed. As one of our own long-standing Business Advisors, Tom Thunstrom takes on a new role, our team is excited to welcome him as Sussex Center Director in the Georgetown office!

With 5 years of service to the Delaware SBDC, Tom has worked with over 400 clients. He has helped 30 businesses start and infused over $8 million in capital formation into the Delaware economy. He brings nearly 20 years of management experience between the financial services and nonprofit sectors, most recently with WSFS Bank. Tom’s experience has taken him from the frozen tundra of Minnesota to 15 years in not-as-frozen suburban Philadelphia before relocating to Sussex County in 2017. Tom’s civic engagement includes leadership tenure with a Chamber of Commerce in suburban Philadelphia, with a financial literacy nonprofit in Pennsylvania, and with a nonprofit collaborative organization.

Tom’s expertise is in finance, operations, marketing, and planning. He is passionate about helping businesses work smarter and more efficiently to increase their impact and bottom line. During his time at the SBDC, he has built relationships with multiple lending institutions, local chambers, Delaware World Trade Center, and US Commercial Services through his expertise as an Export Certified Advisor.

A quote from one of Tom’s clients showcases the efforts of our staff at the SBDC:

“Their help, support, coaching, and tools have been invaluable! Any questions or worries I have – no matter how simple or complex – they have answers, ideas, support, and extremely good resources for us to lean on. Everyone I’ve encountered at the SBDC understands how hard it is to start a business, and their concern for our success is more than genuine – it’s personal.

– Cari Miller (The Great STEMporium)

In his role as Sussex County Center Director, Tom will oversee strategic communications for the county, as well as oversight of operations from the Georgetown office. The position is part of the leadership team for Delaware SBDC and assists in managing advisor professional development and communications, process improvement, and strategic planning.

Sarah Mailloux, Associate State Director of the Delaware SBDC is thrilled to see Tom in this new role:

“I have had the pleasure to work with Tom over several years. He is incredibly hard working and has a strong grasp of SBDC needs and opportunities. His insightfulness, innovative approach to problem solving, and transparent candor will be great assets as he takes on this new role”

– Sarah Mailloux, Delaware SBDC Associate State Director

In his spare time, Tom is an avid runner, occasional reader, and serves on the Board of Directors at the Community Resource Center in Rehoboth Beach. Tom is a graduate of the University of Minnesota.

Congratulations, Tom – We are excited to see the impact your leadership will have on Sussex County and the Small Business ecosystem throughout Delaware!
